Welcome to the extraordinary folk art of Barn Quilts.

Sawtooth Star Barn Quilt

Barn Quilts in and around Evansville, WI (with map) 2015

Sweetfield Barn QuiltBarn Quilts are quilt block patterns painted on a wooden square.  The quilt block is then displayed on the side of a barn, or in some cases a residence or business building, to honor our rural heritage.  These quilt blocks are easily seen from public roads throughout the countryside.  The patterns vary from historical quilt blocks to custom designed squares.

The American Barn Quilt Movement began in Ohio in 2001 and quickly gained momentum in Wisconsin.  Rock County has more barn quilts than any other county in the United States; many are in the Evansville area.

The Rock County Barn Quilt Project has the following objectives:

  • Promote rural heritage of Rock County.

  • Highlight the architecture and history of barns in the county through relevant quilt blocks.

  • Encourage economic development by promoting ag-tourism and local business.

  • Educate the public about the art and history of quilting.

  • Form youth-adult partnerships to help teach all ages about the project and our heritage.
