Evansville--A Great Place To Do Business
With a convenient location between Madison and Janesville,
and relatively close proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, Evansville
has proven to be a great location for businesses since its settlement
in 1839. Evansville has a rail line and is within 15 miles of Interstate 90. Baker Manufacturing, which opened
its doors here in 1873, a manufacturing facility for Stoughton Trailer, and steel building construction manufacturer
Varco-Pruden are three of the largest employers in Evansville. Small
businesses flourish as well, as seen by the long list
of local businesses in Evansville.

Evansville's historic downtown showcases
store fronts and business buildings built during the days
of horse-drawn carriages
|
 |
that not only lasted through the first
half of the 1900s, when motor cars and electric poles first
lined the streets,
|
 |
but still stand now, in the new millennium,
having been carefully preserved and restored by business owners
who appreciate their historic beauty and value |
| In 2005, Union Bank and Trust Company acquired and renovated this 1897 building to the east of their more contemporary structure. The two buildings are merged along their common wall to satisfy increased space needs while keeping the business downtown. |
|
| The facade and interior of this 1892 building was completely renovated in 2006. Restoring the original three entrances and the large plate glass windows was the work of a local artisan. |

Main Street Renovations Expected to Attract New Businesses to Main Street
In summer 2007, a complete renovation of the streetscape on Main Street from First Street east to the bridge over Allen Creek will occur as part of a utility update. 100-year old stormwater and sewer lines, as well as water and electric services, will be replaced.
New Streetscape features will include:
- Repaving of two blocks of Main Street with antique paving bricks dug up when the utility work is done. The bricks had been covered with asphalt about 45 years ago.
- Widening Main Street so as to permit angle parking on both sides of the street.
- Clearly marked crosswalks mid-block.
- New sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping, benches, and bicycle racks. |
